അല്പം ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഗ്രാമര്‍ പഠിക്കാം

 As if / As though
പത്താം ക്ളാസിലെ പുതിയ ഇംഗ്ളീഷ് പാഠ പുസ്തകത്തില്‍ `FATHER’S HELP’ എന്ന ഒന്നാമത്തെ പാഠത്തില്‍ കുട്ടികള്‍ പഠിക്കേണ്ട ഗ്രാമര്‍ ഭാഗമാണ് `as though’ എന്ന പ്രയോഗം. ഇതേ അര്‍ഥത്തിലുള്ള മറ്റൊരു പ്രയോഗമാണ് `as if’.
It looked as though only a moment ago it had been the last period on Friday എന്നതാണ് as though ചേര്‍ത്ത പാഠ പുസ്തകത്തിലെ വാചകം.
താഴെ പറയുന്ന ഉദാഹരണങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് as though / as if പ്രയോഗം എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കാം.
Alexander speaks on every branch of science as if  he knew every thing about it.
ഇവിടെ Alexander speaks on every branch... എന്നതാണ് പ്രധാന വാക്യം. ഇതിലെ verb (speaks) simple present tense ആണ്. അതിനു ശേഷം as if ചേര്‍ത്തുവന്ന വാക്യത്തിലെ verb (knew) ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് past tense ലാണ്. അലക്സാണ്ടര്‍ ഓരോ ശാസ്ത്ര ശാഖയെപ്പറ്റിയും സംസാരിക്കുന്നു. അതിനെപ്പറ്റി എല്ലാം അറിയുന്നവനെപ്പോലെ. അലക്സാണ്ടര്‍ക്ക് അതറിയില്ല എന്നതാണ് യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യം.
He walks as if he were drunk. അവന്‍ കള്ളു കുടിച്ചവനെപ്പോലെ നടക്കുന്നു. യഥാര്‍ഥത്തില്‍ കള്ളു കുടിച്ചിട്ടില്ല.
ഇനി as if ചേര്‍ത്ത് വരുന്ന വാചക ഭാഗത്തില്‍ present tense ആണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതെങ്കില്‍ പറയുന്ന കാര്യത്തെപ്പറ്റി തീര്‍ച്ചയില്ല എന്നാണര്‍ഥം.
ഉദാ: He walks as if he is drunk. ഇവിടെ as if നു ശേഷം present tense ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ആ നടക്കുന്നയാള്‍ മദ്യപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ ഇല്ലയോ എന്ന് ഉറപ്പില്ല.
Simple past ആണ് പ്രധാന വാക്യത്തില്‍ വരുന്നതെങ്കില്‍ as though ചേര്‍ത്തു വരുന്ന വാചക ഘടനയില്‍ past tense അല്ളെങ്കില്‍ past perfect tense ഉപയോഗിക്കണം.
ഉദാ: She did not have any illness. Still she walked without enthusiasm.
She walked without enthusiasm as if She had illness.
രണ്ടു വാചകങ്ങളെ as if പ്രയോഗത്തിലൂടെ കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ പ്രധാന വാക്യത്തിലെ ആദ്യ ഭാഗത്ത് one might think that, it would seem that, it seemed that, but, still, yet എന്നീ പ്രയോഗങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ അവ ഒഴിവാക്കണം.
ഉദാ: He looks disappointed. He seems to have failed in the examination.
He looks disappointed as if he as failed in the examination.
Raju spends money lavishly. But he is not rich.
Raju spends money lavishly as if he were rich.
The team rejoiced. One might think they had got a prize.
The team rejoiced as if they had got a prize.
Activity:
Combine the following sentences using as if / as though.
1. He appears on the stage to sing. But he is not a singer.
2. He was not ill. but he walks slowly.
